NSW’s shrinking manufacturing sector will get a helping hand from state government-appointed Industry Taskforces assigned to develop industry action plans for the state’s manufacturing and professional services sectors.

The newly appointed industry taskforces will work with the NSW Government to develop strategies to grow both sectors. These strategies will form Industry Action Plans (Manufacturing Industry Action Plan and the Professional Services Action Plan) which will shape the Government’s NSW 2021 10 year strategic plan.

The Manufacturing Industry Action Plan will address issues facing the mature, advanced and emerging elements of the sector and examine specific subsectors with strong Gross State Product and exports contribution potential.

The Plan will focus on a number of subsectors including: processed food and beverage manufacturing; metal manufacturing; and machinery and equipment manufacturing, such as biomedical and medical devices, defence and renewable energy technologies.

Export opportunities, innovation and productivity, investment, workforce skills and capabilities, employment and workforce participation, business framework conditions and the existing regulatory burden will be some of the issues considered under the Plan.

The Manufacturing Industry Action Plan is expected to be released in September 2012 along with the Professional Services Action Plan

Manufacturing is the second largest industry contributor to the NSW economy. In 2010, it generated $32.8 billion (or 10%) to the State’s industry value adds.
